We are happy to announce a big upgrade to the flood alert system. The old system cost the city $1000 a year to operate, relied on the phone lines, only updated hourly and only one person could check stages at a time due to busy signal with phone line. The new system is a satellite communication that updates every 15 minutes with the option of citizens setting up an alarm for their desired flood level that sends text messages to their phones alerting them to evacuate (which we encourage people to do).
Now everyone will know the river stages the same time the fire dept. is notified of it, eliminating the lag time for the department to knock on doors and call people. The usgs will now cover the full cost of this system eliminating the large yearly expense of the city while making it much better. We can’t thank them enough for granting the mayors request for this system to make our town safer.
